18ct White Gold or Platinum?

The answer depends on what you are wanting to create….

Legacy Ring

If you are looking to create a Legacy ring and your preference is a white precious metal, then we would strongly recommend platinum.

Why?

Platinum is a naturally white precious metal, unlike 18ct white gold. This means it won’t need re-rhodium plating to keep it bright and white. It is also a more durable metal than 18ct gold, which means it is perfect for a ring you are going to be wearing every day.

The other main reason to choose platinum over 18ct white gold is cost. Currently the less expensive option is platinum. The price of gold has been steadily rising over recent years and at the moment, 18ct gold is more expensive than platinum.

So, for a Legacy ring, we would recommend platinum.

Legacy Pendants

If you are wanting to create a white metal Legacy pendant then our advice is different. We would recommend 18ct gold, rather than platinum.

Why?

Pendants are less likely to come into direct contact with other surfaces and so the bright whiteness of the metal will not wear off and dull over time, like a ring.

The other factor to consider, is that platinum chains are more expensive than 18ct gold and the choice in platinum is extremely limited. So for choice and flexibility with regards to length and style of chain, we would recommend 18ct white gold.
